Abstract
There is still no clear and consistent understanding of how the nature of the mind is explained within Mulla Sadra’s philosophical system. On the one hand, Mulla Sadra develops a distinctive theory of the soul; on the other hand, he presents an account of the mind that differs considerably from many earlier philosophical traditions. This article reconstructs and clarifies his view of the mind through the broader framework of Sadrian philosophy. By comparing his principles concerning the soul and its functions with his analysis of mental activity, I argue that the mind is identical with the human intellective soul. From the standpoint of Sadrian philosophy, the intellective soul possesses imaginal immateriality and should be distinguished from the fully rational soul. Accordingly, Mulla Sadra ultimately identifies the mind with the intellective soul.
